The Shapes of Fiction

September 26 @ 6:00 pm - November 7 @ 9:00 pm

Short fiction comes in all shapes, and you, as the author, have control over how you structure the narrative. Will you tell your story through letters or diaries entries? Will it read more like a parable? Will your plot be linear or episodic? In this course, we will explore the many “containers” that can hold a story. Through in-class exercises you will experiment with different forms, learning techniques to apply in your fiction. We will read and deconstruct the work of contemporary authors Ha Jin, Tim O’Brien, Carmen Maria Machado and Alice Munro, as well as the classic work of Flannery O’Conner and Eudora Welty. By the end of the course, you will more fully understand how the choices you make in structure affect other fictional elements, such as point of view, characterization and scene development.
