Health and Physical Education
DANCE Siobhan Cute There are no prerequisites and no performances (unless you want to do one, of course). Come to stretch, exercise and improve coordination and your overall state of well-being. We can and will invite teachers in to help us learn and practice different styles of dance. We can and will listen to different styles of music that encourage different styles of movement, which are not limited to but might include West Indian, Latin, African, belly dance, and more. Bring your enthusiasm, and find your rhythm!
THE DARK SIDE OF TECHNOLOGY John Reis This health class will explore issues of respect and difference, teaching skills like assertive communication and safety. The class will have a particular focus on technology, because today's young people can go anywhere, anytime, to meet anyone in the world and discuss any subject and never leave their rooms. The class will deal with cyber-threats, sexting, relational aggression, predators, and suicide prevention.
FROSTY TOUCH FOOTBALL Cary Honig, Laurie Spry and Stephen Martin If you’re too tough for inside sports during the winter and aren’t concerned about getting wet or cold, this is the class for you. We will be heading out to the frozen tundra of Patterson Park for a weekly game of touch football regardless of the temperature. If you’re going to whine about the temperature, please don’t sign up for this class. We will play in the snow but not in a hard rain. Warm apparel and a change of clothes on Fridays are strongly suggested.
FROSTY WALKINGIvette Roberts Please join us on Friday afternoons for a simple class in the fine art of walking. Students should be prepared with appropriate footwear, warm clothing and a wonderful attitude. We will be walking rain or shine, warm or cold days and bad days or good days. We will also be walking faster than you want to, so don’t sign up if you can’t move faster than a crawl. This is a simple way to earn credit in gym because all that is required of you is to show up and participate in a simple hour and twenty minute walk at a reasonable pace (as judged by Ivette rather than you). How hard can that be? You need to dress appropriately for cold weather. If you aren’t prepared and participating or if you are whining, you won’t earn credit.
THE HEALTH CLASS Erin Victoria Egan The subject matter in health class will be wide-ranging and responsive to the interests of the class. Requirements for earning credit include punctual attendance, respectful participation and production of a short paper and oral presentation to the class.
P.E. SMORGASBORD Michael Fox, Patrice Roberts Join Michael and Patrice for a potpourri of exciting games and activities. One week you may be outdoors kicking a frozen hackeysack and talking philosophy with Michael, and the next you might be indoors playing in a beanbag toss tournament with Patrice. The activities will change from week to week depending on student interest and instructor creativity. Dress for the weather in case we go outside. Participation is mandatory.
BASIC YOGA Megan Bradley Our yoga class will start with the basics. We will practice some of the simple asanas (poses) and progress into sun salutations, all while learning the benefits of a consistant yoga routine. Students will not be given credit based on their ability but on their willingness to work and preparedness for class. This includes appropriate clothing (loose, flexible, comfortable clothing) and a good attitude. Mats will be provided.
