AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

A NOTE ABOUT AFTER SCHOOL USE OF THE BUILDING

We are providing several after school activities for students as described below, and your child is encouraged to take part in them.  However, most of the staff leaves by 3:30, and on most days the only staff in the building after 4 p.m. will be those running the activities below.  Therefore, only students who are actively engaged in these activities may remain in the building after 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday or 1 p.m. on Fridays and only until the activity is finished.  Students who are not taking the competency exams or who don’t have specific permission to work on a project should leave school at 1 p.m. on Fridays to avoid disruption of staff meeting and the exams.  If you drive your child home and cannot pick him/her up at these times, we suggest coming up with a meeting place in the area like a store in Wayland Square or on Thayer Street where s/he can be safe and warm until you arrive.  We don’t want to leave students out in the cold, but on most days there is no one to stay at school and supervise students until 5 or 5:30.  Thank you for your cooperation.

SPORTS TEAM OPPORTUNITIES

School One is now a member of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.  This means that our students can play on teams at their home high schools with the approval of that school if it doesn’t mean missing classes.   The rules of the league ensure that students must maintain high academic standards to continue on these teams, so we will report regularly to the league on class performance.  If you are interested, speak with your advisor, but you will have to make arrangements with your home school as well.

AFTER-SCHOOL DRAMA

Casey Seymour Kim

After-School Drama meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-4:40 p.m., usually in The Library.  We can always use help with props, technical elements and costumes—even if you don’t necessarily want to perform.  Stop by if you’re interested!

AFTER SCHOOL MUSIC 1

Lon Plynton

You wanna be a star?  You gotta start somewhere: beginning musicians. We will learn about scales, chords, rhythms, meters, music terminology and basic theory.   We will study different music genres and learn how to create music solo and as an ensemble on Wednesday afternoons.  All students must provide their own instruments and be willing to cart them to school on Wednesdays.

FILM SOCIETY

Cary Honig

The film society shows films you have not seen unless you have good taste.  The purpose is to find out about directors, actors, writers and techniques you might miss if you think film excellence begins and ends with Clerks, Titanic and Braveheart.  (Actually, if you liked any of these, we may not be able to help you.)  We can discuss the films AFTER they end, but we will observe good film etiquette: no talking, no cell phones or pagers and no wandering around during the movies.  Last trimester, we saluted Martin Scorsese, but this trimester we are going to try something unique in Film Society annals.  We are going to salute an extremely innovative and entertaining television show from the 1960s: The Prisoner.  It’s a blend of science fiction, black humor and political satire that really has a ‘60s aesthetic.  We will watch an episode or two (about an hour and 45 minutes every other Monday right after school.  If there is interest, we will continue through all 17 episodes, which will probably require second trimester as well.

AFTER SCHOOL STUDY

Staff

It’s tough to find help or a quiet place or time to do homework You may need a dependable computer and printer to get written work completed.  You might want some extra help on one of the comps. or on the competency essay.  If you do, After School Study might make the difference between academic success and academic problems.  Mondays through Thursdays, at least one staff member will be available from 3 to 4:30 p.m. to assist students with their work in the computer room next to Oz.  When classes begin we will post regular days of the staff members who will be participating so that you will know which days are better to get help with math and which are better to get help with English.  After School Study is intended to be a supervised learning experience.  It is not a time to wander the school or play video games. Computer use must be supervised.
